Search has split in two. People still type queries into Google, but a fast-growing share of research now happens inside AI assistants: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google’s own AI Overviews. These tools don’t return ten blue links. They return one answer, and they cite only a handful of sources.
If your brand isn’t one of those sources, you’re invisible at the exact moment a buyer is making up their mind. That’s why we now plan every SEO engagement around three layers: traditional SEO, AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).
What’s the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
- SEO earns rankings in classic search results through technical health, relevant content and authority.
- AEO wins the direct answer: featured snippets, “People also ask” boxes and voice results.
- GEO makes your brand the source AI models trust, quote and recommend when they generate an answer.
They overlap, but GEO adds new requirements. Large language models reward clarity, facts and consistency across the web far more than keyword density.
6 practical ways to get cited by AI
1. Answer real questions, directly
Structure key pages around the questions customers actually ask. Put a clear, two-to-three sentence answer right under each question, then expand. AI systems extract these concise answers far more easily than long, meandering intros.
2. Increase your factual density
Models prefer content they can verify. Use specific numbers, dates, prices, definitions and named methodologies. “Most projects launch in 4–8 weeks” is citable; “we’re fast” is not.
3. Build a consistent entity footprint
Make sure your company name, services, location and leadership are described the same way on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories like Clutch, and press mentions. Consistency helps AI connect the dots and treat your brand as a known entity.
4. Use schema markup everywhere it fits
Organization, Service, FAQPage, Article and Review schema give machines an unambiguous summary of who you are and what you offer. It’s one of the cheapest wins in modern SEO.
5. Create topic clusters, not one-off posts
A single article rarely establishes authority. A pillar page supported by 6–10 in-depth related articles, all interlinked, signals genuine expertise and gives AI multiple angles to cite.
6. Earn mentions on sources AI already trusts
Generative engines lean heavily on reputable publications, industry roundups, review platforms and community discussions. Digital PR, guest expertise and genuine reviews feed directly into what AI “knows” about you.
Rankings come and go. Authority compounds, and in an AI-first world, authority is what gets you quoted.
How to measure AI visibility
Classic rank tracking doesn’t capture AI answers, so we track a set of priority prompts across the major assistants each month, logging whether the brand is mentioned, cited or recommended, alongside referral traffic from AI platforms in analytics.
Where to start
Pick your five most valuable services or products. For each, list the ten questions buyers ask before purchasing, and make sure your site answers every one clearly, factually and with schema. That alone puts you ahead of most competitors.
